Jumper's Knee
This condition is described as a strain, or overuse, of the
patellar tendon, where it inserts into the inferior (lower)
pole of the patella. It is related to the repetitive extensor
action of the knee with the generation of large eccentric
forces. It has been found that the greatest tensile forces
in the patellar tendon occur on landing. It is called Jumper's
Knee as it predominantly occurs during jumping-type sports
e.g. basketball, netball, volleyball and athletics e.g. triple
jumpers, high jumpers and long jumpers. It may, on the other
hand, be as a direct result of trauma to the knee e.g. weight
lifters who perform squats under load or a fall directly onto
the knee.
